See the Secondary School That Charges Five Million Naira Per Session

Both federal and states governments have not been able to provide education for the increasingly growing population of Nigerian kids. The ones that have been provided are mostly poorly structured-lacking basic amenities like laboratories, libraries, and a conducive environment. No doubt, there are some federal government and state government schools that are top-notch but they are very few.

Because of this problem in the education sector, private schools have been thriving by providing quality and standard education. Truth be told, a lot of Nigerians cannot afford some of these standard private schools as they are pretty expensive. It is safe to say that their target market is the elite (upper class and some “upper” middle class).

To put expensive in perspective (seems it is a relative word). I mean schools that charge millions of naira and thousands of US dollars. In this article, we will be “examining” a school that charges 5.5 million as school fees per year or session.

American International School, Lagos

The American International School of Lagos (AISL) is a private, co-educational leaning citadel that offers an American standard educational program for students from all countries all over the world from preschool to 12th grade. AISL high school students have the option of choosing between United States High School Diploma or an International Baccalaureate diploma. All the curricula used in teaching at AISL is based on US standards. AISL has a lot of international and national accreditations. Some of the accreditations are the Council of International Schools Accreditation and the Middle States Association accreditation. It is also worthy to state that AISL is an International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) World School.

AISL was founded in 1964 but the Victoria Island Campus of the school with a landmass of 6 acres was established in 1981. Just like most other businesses, AISL started with 30 students and has grown to over 600 students attending the school. AISL embraces diversity with its students representing fifty-five (55) countries and their staff represents fourteen (14) countries. 58% of the teachers are from the United States; 18% are Nigerians; 5% are from the United Kingdom and South Africa; and 11% are from France, India, Lebanon, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Venezuela, and Zambia.

The school provides opportunities for both personal and social development for all students irrespective of race and gender by exposing them to different interests and experiences. Students also participate in athletics.
