Gweru Council Decline Request To Construct Mall

Gweru Midlands

The Gweru City Council has turned down a request by a private construction company to construct a shopping mall at council works yard in the Central Business District (CBD).

The local authority said it was not ready for such a development.

Bentach Resources, which recently renovated Kudzanai Bus Terminus, had requested to partner with the local authority to build the mall but councillors said no.

According to the latest council minutes, Ward 16 councillor, Tawanda Magidi explained that the shopping mall will not only lead to more revenue but also beautify the city. He said:

I would like to urge the council to consider the request by Bentach which I think is a good move and a good project for our city.

A shopping mall can create more revenue for us and it can beautify the city.

But the deputy Mayor Councillor Cleopas Shiri, who was chairing the meeting, and the majority of councillors said the council was not ready.

A councillor who declined to be identified told The Sunday News that the request was rejected so that the contractor Bentach Resources), will not have a monopoly on infrastructure renovation services in the Midlands provincial capital. Said the councillor:

The request was already pre-discussed and completely rejected by councillors who preferred to play defence games at the expense of development and progress.

They just want to get rid of the monopolisation of renovation services by one company.

The reaction shown by the councillors is a display of what was predetermined.
