SC Genotype: BBNaija Laycon ‘revelation’ and What you need to know about Hemoglobin SC disease

What is the difference between Sickle Cell SS and SC?

The hemoglobin (Hb) SC genotype is seen in persons who have inherited the gene for hemoglobin S from one parent and the gene for hemoglobin C from the other.

Some people with this genotype develop Hb SC disease, a variant of sickle cell disease. Hb SC disease, a compound heterozygous condition, is the most common of the hemoglobinopathies and the least severe, although it is still serious.

A person Who knows about this type of genotype said , they haven’t studied the life span of the people with SC genotype, he said they should live longer if they take good care of their health.

He also added that it’s a mistake if SC marry SS or AS.

What is Sickle cell anemia?

Sickle cell anemia, or sickle cell disease (SCD), is a genetic disease of the red blood cells (RBCs).

Normally, RBCs always shaped like discs, that give dem the flexibility to travel through even the smallest blood vessels. However, with this disease, the RBCs get abnormal crescent shape that resemble sickle.

This always make them smaller and also make them trap for small vessels, that block blood from reaching different parts of the body. This usually cause pain and tissue damage.

What are the symptoms of sickle cell anemia?

Symptoms of sickle cell anemia are usually show up at early age. Symptoms can also start from four (4) months or generally six (6) months of birth.

Although there are different types of SCD, Do have similar symptoms but difference in times of seriousness.

Some of the symptoms are :

  1. Serious tiredness, irritation from anemia.
  2. Jaundice, Yellow eyes and yellow skin
  3. Swelling and pain hands and legs
  4. All times infections
  5. Chest pain back pain also Arms and legs pain
