Bad news for Arsenal? Sevilla confirm Monchi talks

Posted by on March 15th, 2019

Sevilla have held ‘very positive’ talks with Monchi about a potential return to the club, according to president, Jose Castro.

Monchi, 50, spent 17 seasons as Director of Football at Sevilla, helping the Andalusian’s win 11 trophies during that time before leaving the club in April 2017 to join Roma.

Monchi to snub Arsenal for Sevilla return? Five key things to know…

  1. Monchi spent 17 years as Director of Football at Sevilla between 2010 and 2017.
  2. The club won 11 trophies in that time, with Monchi unearthing star talent such as Sergio Ramos and Dani Alves.
  3. The Spaniard left the club in 2017 to take up a position at Roma, which he has since left earlier in March.
  4. Monchi has recently been linked with the vacant role at Arsenal, which would reunite him with Unai Emery.
  5. But Sevilla president, Jose Castro, has now revealed the club are in ‘very positive’ talks with Monchi.

However, the Spaniard recently left his post at the Italian by mutual consent, leading to widespread speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal.

That speculation now appears to be wide of the mark with Castro now confirming the club, who dismissed coach Pablo Machin recently, are involved in positive talks with Monchi.

“Sevilla now need a sports director and we have looked for the best,” Castro told reporters on Friday.

“And the best is Monchi. Our conversations go well with him. The conversations have been very positive.”

What gems did Monchi uncover during his Sevilla days?

Between 200 and 2017, Sevilla won 11 major trophies, including two Copa del Reys and a record five Europa League titles.

That was largely thanks to the exploits of Monchi, who helped uncover some footballing gems such as  Diego Capel, Alberto Moreno, Jesús Navas, Antonio Puerta, Sergio Ramos and José Antonio Reyes, thanks to his reportedly 700-strong worldwide scouting network.

Not only that, but the former goalkeeper also engineered bargain moves for the likes of Adriano, Dani Alves, Júlio Baptista, Federico Fazio, Seydou Keita and Ivan Rakitić, with Los Hispalenses making a gargantuan profit when selling these players on.

A move to Arsenal would reunite him with former Sevilla boss, Unai Emery, although a return to the club with which he has had so much success could also be very appealing to Monchi.
