Rangers boss Steven Gerrard backs himself to overcome ‘keyboard wizards’

Posted by on March 17th, 2019

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is not concerned about the criticism of “keyboard wizards” after four games without a win.

Gerrard, 38, took over the club at the start off the season in his fist foray into football management which, so far, has not been a disaster.

Gerrard’s first season at Rangers: Five key things to know…

  1. Gerrard arrived at the club in the summer of 2018, with his only previous experience in coaching being with Liverpool’s youth team.
  2. Gerrard has brought in a total of 20 players since the summer, 18 of whom have remained at the club.
  3. The Englishman has guided Rangers to second place, if they remain there that will be the highest they’ve finished since the 2011-12 season.
  4. Rangers are currently going through a rough patch, however, without a win in four games across all competitions.
  5. Despite this, Gerrard has backed himself to get the better of ‘keyboard wizards’.

Rangers have struggled for form recently, failing to win their last four games across all competitions and dropped four points with draws in their last two league games.

Compounding matters was Rangers’ exit in the Scottish Cup on Tuesday, losing to Aberdeen for the second time in a cup tournament this season.

Despite the run of bad fortune and the reaction of critics, the former Liverpool captain guarantees he’s taking it all in his stride.

“I’ve picked myself back up and I can guarantee you that I will improve personally moving forward,” Gerrard told the BBC.

“I’m well aware of the job I signed up for. I know after a few bad results pundits and keyboard wizards will always be there. That’s fine.

“There had to be a lot of change when I took over in the job. I knew I wasn’t going to sort the problem out in one transfer window, not even two. But without a doubt we’ve moved forward, we’ve improved.

“Players that were here before have raised their game. Players that we’ve brought in, the majority, have stood up and done really well.”

“We’re doing everything we can” – Gerrard

Since Gerrard arrived at the club the Englishman has brought 20 players, 15 during the summer five more players in January in what’s shaping up to be a complete squad overhaul.

“We’re doing everything we can to make Rangers a better team and a winning team,” Gerrard said.

“My confidence hasn’t changed that I can make that happen but it’s not going to happen overnight. This job was huge when I walked in and it was huge for a reason because a lot of things needed fixing.

“There will be change here, there’ll be new players, there’ll be better players because the current players need some help and support to keep growing and keep improving.

“We will get more quality and add to it. I don’t expect the same in terms of numbers because I don’t think we need a squad overhaul. I think we need some bits of magic, a couple of marquee players to add to what we’ve got to maybe go to another level.”

The Old Firm meet again on 31 March, with Celtic currently sitting comfortably at the top of the league, ahead by seven points with a game in hand.
